MRHS59: 50th Reunion Entertainment Plans

John Duncan, CEO
We have started to think about how to keep us oldies from falling asleep during the reunion.

A few good ideas have come in alreday. This is an ideas page. Please feel free to contribute and comment.

Chief Entertainment Officer (CEO)

PS If you get an autoreply from my company, don't worry. I will still get your email and will reply to it—eventually.

On 18 June 2008, Karen Lipsey wrote to tell us that her mother, Melaine Goldman (11F), is quite a poet, and is often asked to read her poetry at events around Montreal.

She has offered to read something for us at the reunion. Read more on Melaine's bio.

Hey John Duncan!

I remember you!

Being a packrat , I asked myself the other day what artifacts I might still have from High School. To my surprise, I came across our Quebec High School Leaving Exam in History.

Now, stop groaning!

I don't know why I kept it because I was not a big fan of history as a subject in 1959 and had the impression that Mr. Hardy (Wasn't he out history teacher?) wasn't too thrilled with the subject either. Anyway, I read over this yellowing copy of our provincial History exam and was blown away by the questions on it! So, with some difficulty, because I only remembered that it was blue and heavy, I tracked down a copy of our history textbook WORLD CIVILIZATION. It's quite entertaining to examine fifty years later. Laughable in parts.

I would be happy to hold forth for a few minutes—I promise to be brief—at the class reunion on:
THE UNBELIEVABLE THINGS WE WERE TAUGHT IN HISTORY A HALF CENTURY AGO.

Does that qualify as entertainment?

Cheers, Don

Hi Don,
That is priceless....just fantastic.
By all means.
Keep us informed.....send a draft if you like

I have been thinking a lot about the reunion next year and I've already exchanged e-mails with several people with whom I haven't had contact for years and years. Great fun, even if nothing further happens,– which doesn't seem to be the case.

The reunion project gets you thinking about your high school days, and I have to admit that it's not the city, the teachers, or the students that are most evocative for me,– but the music.

If you go to the Wikipedia website and find the pages on "1958 singles" and "1959 singles" you'll see what I mean.

We have (at least) two professional musicians in the class,– Frank Mills and Joe Padulo. Wouldn't it be great if we made sure that these two were attending, the venue had a piano and Joe brought his guitar and they could choose from tunes of the day to have a great session for the enjoyment of all. I bet we could even raise a presentable back up vocal group.

This may be in contravention of many musicians' unions rules, etc, but what're they going to do,– put a bunch of senior citizens in jail? (Incidentally, this is an approach that I have found to be very successful with the RCMP when stopped for minor driving infactions,– "Is this the best way you guys can find to spend your time,– hassling senior citizens?"

Are you listening, Joe and Frank?

Hullo John

All through high school,
I sat beside Victor Yankovitch
on the trumpet bench at
concerts, operettas and music festivals.

Even in those days
Vic was a great musician,
and I understand from his bio
that he went on to become
a professional (part time) pianist.

He mentions in his bio
that he can now play Fantasy Impromptu
to his own satisfaction,
something that he has been working on
throughout his career.

I would love to hear him play this piece
at the reunion, and I'm prepared to guess
that goes for most MRHS59 (ex-)musicians.

In fact, the piece (by Chopin) is a
bavura fireworks display of piano virtuosity
which even people who don't usually listen
to classical music can enjoy.

Monty MacLean

Hi Monty,
The entertainment page should surely incorporate stories just like this.

Hello John (& former High School Band wind players, etc.),

Yes, I agree the reunion would be spiced up with participation of the musical kind. Way to go, Robin & Carol. And John. As for me, I remained in Montreal partly due to its arts & music scene and involvement of the amateur kind in choirs, CAMMAC, the American and Montreal Recorder Societies, and a recorder quartet (occasionally quintet) "I Conviviali". that plays in schools and seniors residences.

Therefore I invite RECORDER PLAYERS, or those who can play quietly on other wind instruments, or compose or arrange, to form a reunion ensemble. I have stacks of music and a music room (with piano). Players from out of town could obtain scores beforehand....

You may reach me by e-mail, or on Sunday afternoon, March 30th at PLAY THE RECORDER DAY at the St. Michel Library (Bibliothèque Saint-Michel) near St. Michel metro in Montreal.

Hoping to hear from former band persons, or others who may have taken up the recorder since.

Hello John Duncan, CEO!

Carol Bromley ( MRHS58) and I started corresponding with one another about 2 years ago — we had not had any contact for over 40 years ( and actually had been then 'friendly' , but not 'friends'.) We have kept our correspondence — in essence, she wanted to know what it was like to live a different life from that offered in TMR, while I wanted to know what my life now would have been like had I followed the usual course.

Carol has a wonderful sense of humour. She and I are offering to do a 15 minute dramatic presentation/skit based on our correspondence. All we would need for props are two chairs. We are offering this, trusting that our respective health conditions would allow us both the be there ( but isn't that the same for most of us?). But if you accept this idea, we will be there 'with bells on'.

Robin Goodfellow-Baikie

Hi Robin,

How wonderful!!!!!

I suspect I would be on your side of the stage when it comes to alternate lifestyle!
